I know that probably someone will say “This is 1864 all over again” and I get why you may think of that. But I want to focus on the differences. Back then Katherine was amused to get the attentions of both Salvatore brothers. Like she said they had both of them to keep her entertained. It was like a game. Stefan and Damon were both allured by her. They wanted her. Stefan himself said he didn’t care if he had something that his brother wanted and that it hurt him. All of this brought them to hate each other. If before they were best friends, after Katherine they basically wished each other an eternity of misery.

But now it’s different. Stefan and Damon started the show hating each other. There was no trust, no friendship. But meeting Elena changed their lives and their bond. In different situation they teamed up together for a common goal or simply because they couldn’t let anyone kill one of them. Elena had a huge impact in their relationship. It’s true. It’s not ideal or easy to love the same woman, but since she’s in their life, their bond grew stronger. It was a roller coaster and they did and said horrible thing to each other. But since Katherine they’ve never been this close as now. This time they care if one of them gets hurt. It isn’t simply something “they want.”

And while Katherine was amused by having the affections of both of them, Elena is torn by it. She didn’t want to fall in love with both of them. She didn’t want to repeat the past. She knows that it’s “wrong” to love them both and she doesn’t want to hurt or lose them. Inevitably one will be hurt, it’s true. But it’s also true that even if it seems like Stefan and Damon are destined to repeat the past, this time they won’t lose each other. This time they won’t hate each other. This time they care. This time they aren’t treated like toys.
